Quintile & Septiles

Aspects are angles made by planets, with respect to the centre of the Earth. They are measured along the ecliptic (path of the Sun through the zodiac). For example, an ‘opposition’ aspect is 180° degrees while a ‘square’ aspect is 90°.

According to the late John Addey, 2 prime-number aspects often ignored by astrologers had an especial connection with the idea of ‘creativity’. Deriving from the numbers 5 and 7, they are the Quintile and Septile aspects. The quintile was invented (or discovered) by Kepler, while the Septile has only been used in fairly modern times..

John Addey also proposed how the orbs of these small or ‘minor’ aspects should be determined: they should have orbs of 12/n° where n is the ‘harmonic number’. For Quintiles the number is 5, as gives an orb of ±2°.20′. Likewise the family of Septiles are here shown, with a 12/7 orb as comes to ±1°43′. One would expect just over 2 Quintiles per chart, and likewise for the Septiles.

Note: The Quintile interpretations apply especially to the Quintile (72°) and BiQuintile (144°). They also apply to the weaker Decile (36°) and TriDecile (108°). They should be taken into account along with a weak version of the interpretation of the Square when considering the meaning of the Vigintile (18°), TriVigintile (54°), SeptVigintile (126°) and NovVigintile (162°). They should be taken into account along with a weak version of the interpretation of the Trine when considering the meaning of the QuintiTrine (24°), BiquintiTrine (48°), QuadquintiTrine (96°) and SeptquintiTrine (168°).

The Septile interpretations apply especially to the Septile (51.4°), BiSeptile (102.9°) and TriSeptile (154.3°). They also apply to the weaker SemiSeptile (25.7°) and TrisemiSeptile (128.6°).

The Novile interpretations apply especially to the Novile (40°), BiNovile (80°) and QuadriNovile (160°) aspects.

The SemiSquare interpretations apply especially to SemiSquares ((45°) and SesquiSquares (135°). They also apply to the somewhat weaker SquiSquares (22.5°), TrisquiSquares (67.5°), QuinsquiSquares (112.5°) and Septsquisquares (157.5°). It is worth noting that SemiSquares themselves are by and large not too dissimilar from weaker Squares, being derived from the same prime number circle division combination (multiple factors of ‘2’), so consider also the interpretations of Square aspects between the planets concerned in all these cases.
