The Angles

The points on the horoscope that hold significance are known as “astrological angles.” These angles are formed by the intersection of the horizon and meridian axes, marking key points in the chart:

The Ascendant (AC)
The Midheaven or the Medium Coeli (MC)
The Descendant (DC)
The Imum Coeli or the Nadir (IC)

The Ascendant

The Ascendant, also known as the Rising sign, denotes the precise degree in the zodiac that was ascending on the eastern horizon at the time of one’s birth. As the Earth rotates, this point continually shifts, with the degree of the Ascendant changing approximately every 4 minutes. Both the Ascendant and the Sun sign hold equal significance, with the Ascendant exerting influence over a person’s appearance and various outward qualities. Additionally, it reflects traits that individuals are inclined to pursue or develop. Corresponding to the first house of the horoscope, the Ascendant symbolizes the self and embodies the most intimate aspect of one’s astrological chart. Planets positioned near or in conjunction with the Ascendant delineate specific characteristics of the personality.

The Medium Coeli or Midheaven

The Midheaven, also known as the Medium Coeli, is the highest point in the horoscope chart. It is the southernmost point in the zodiac. The cusp of the 10th house marks the Midheaven point. The Midheaven reflects one’s public image, reputation, and career aspirations. It shows how one expresses oneself to the world at large.

The Descendant

The Descendant is the point in the horoscope chart that is opposite to the Ascendant. It represents the degree of the zodiac that was on the western horizon at the time of birth. This point marks the start of the 7th house, which is the house of outward expression. The first six houses are more personal, but from the 7th house onwards, they deal with our interactions with others. The Descendant shows how we relate to those closest to us. The 7th house is also known as the house of partnerships and marriage. It is very beneficial when our partner’s Ascendant matches our Descendant, because this creates a mirror image of each other and leads to the most harmonious and compatible relationships.

The Imum Coeli or Nadir

The Imum Coeli or Nadir is the point on the horoscope that is opposite to the Medium Coeli. It is the lowest and the northernmost point in the zodiac. The fourth house cusp marks the Imum Coeli. This is the area where we seek security and shelter. It relates to home, traditions, stability, and nurturing. This is our comfort and protection zone. Our activities here are private and hidden. If many planets are near the Imum Coeli, our achievements may not get the recognition they deserve.
