Jupiter

Key to Cultural Values

Positive aspects of Jupiter associated with those facets of human endeavour and personality relating to wealth, generosity, wisdom, knowledge, growth. If Jupiter is prominent, this suggests a desire for greater knowledge of the human spirit and the world in general, which may manifest itself through travel.

Jupiter, the ruler of the ancient gods, is a giant self-illuminating planet, the centre of a mini-solar system of his own (Jupiter has over 60 known moons). A massive force, he radiates more energy than he receives, in keeping with his role as lord and teacher of the gods. Ju-piter (“Father Iu”) as he was known by the Romans was called Zeus by the ancient Greeks. Zeus also became deus (God) in Latin, but the origins of the name are from Sanskrit, the elder tongue of the migrating Indo-European peoples who eventually populated both Europe and India. Jupiter was Dyaus-pitar (“Sky Father”), the original creator.

Traditionally described as the “Greater Fortune” (or “Greater Benefic”, Venus being the “Lesser Benefic”), Jupiter governs joy, luck and wellbeing. When well-aspected, he provides superb opportunities for expansion and success. Poorly aspected, he generates over-confidence and foolhardy actions with little care for the consequences—so we always need to look very carefully at his gifts. Planetary lord of Sagittarius and Pisces, Jupiter is masculine, disciplined, co-operative and priestly. He rules our potential for growth and expansion on many levels: physical, intellectual, spiritual and cultural, along with the accumulation of material assets, power and status. Exalted in Cancer, healing Jupiter describes our optimism and aspirations, but he also rules cultural pursuits, religion, powerful males, government and matters of state.

Jupiter also governs our interests in faraway places, travel, foreigners, academic and artistic types, cultural endeavours such as publishing, higher education, structured personal development, healing, government and religion. Jupiter is a risk-taker, so also rules gambling and speculation, adventure—and moving into unknown territory.

This massive planet spends about a year in each sign, taking twelve years to complete the journey through all twelve signs. He turns retrograde once a year for 120 days, being stationary for some 10 days. Jupiter’s transits set the stag.

Jupiter Aspects

Jupiter is the planet of luck and expansion. This is the planet that can make things fall into your lap. But since it is the planet of expansion, it can also make you put on more weight.

Jupiter/Sun

Has the reputation for being the original “good-time-Charlie” but this is not always the case. John D. Rockefeller Sr. had the square between these two. In his case, it simply increased the desire for more, more, more. With him, the planet Saturn was also strongly placed, and that factor was probably responsible for keeping him from spending his money as fast as it came in. Jupiter tends to confer an optimistic attitude, a constant “Of course I can do it”. Well you know. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Jupiter gives you the confidence to venture and the “luck” to back you up. The danger here, even with the harmonious aspects, is that one day, you will push that luck too far.

Jupiter/Moon

The Moon shows your feelings. Jupiter is optimism. This combination gives an inner optimism that always seems to bounce back no matter what the circumstances. But the Moon also rules the stomach. Watch your weight if you have the stressful aspects. All Moon-Jupiter contacts increase the sense of “noblese oblige”, a desire to be generous. The Moon shows your feelings. Jupiter is optimism. Jupiter/Mercury

The harmonious aspects make it easy for you to make the mental shift from the large to the small, from generalities to specifics, from picky little details to the whole universe. The only problem really, is that when you’re depressed, no one will believe you because you sound so up. The conjunction, in this case, is generally harmonious  The stressful aspects between these two tends to exaggerate. It also can go back and forth between being too bogged down in details, and ignoring them altogether.

Jupiter/Venus

Can make you gentle and sensitive. You are probably easily imposed upon. Venus is charm and Jupiter expands everything it touches. The stressful aspects increase the desire to play first and work later, which is not the best way to accomplish things.

Jupiter/Mars

Can make you gentle and sensitive. You are probably easily imposed upon. Venus is charm and Jupiter expands everything it touches. The stressful aspects increase the desire to play first and work later, which is not the best way to accomplish things.

Jupiter/Ascendant

The conjunction will give you the traits of the Sun-Sign Sagittarius, optimistic, saying whatever is on your mind, a bit reckless. It can also give you some of the negative traits if you aren’t careful, such as not listening and believing that you are ALWAYS right. The conjunction, square, and opposition tend to give a weight problem. Jupiter, after all, is the planet of expansion, and the Ascendant affects appearance. The sextile and trine work in an easier fashion, but there may still be too much of a tendency to trust in luck. “Luck” can run out, you know.

Jupiter/Midheaven

Is perfect for show business. Goldie Hawn and Candice Bergen, for instance, have it right at the top. Marlon Brando has the square. Not only does Jupiter give the expansive qualities that are needed for a career on the stage, but it also adds the one thing that is a necessity for anyone in show business. Good luck.
