The Key to Experience
Chiron Positions
Chiron is subtle, probably feminine yin, with a capacity to find new ways of looking at old situations. Unlike Saturn that restricts, or Jupiter that expands, or Uranus that intuits or Pluto that destroys in order to create, Chiron partakes of a different activity. It teaches in a guiding manner yet through experience rather than the mental gymnastics that Mercury might force upon us as he drops a book on our heads for us to read. Chiron places experiences in our paths that niggle at us because we cannot logify them out of existence yet we cannot fully understand them either – bringing our bodies in line with our minds and spirits so that they can change and live on too. Anything is possible when Chiron is around.
A comet-like planetoid now called Chiron was discovered by Charles T. Kowal on November 1, 1977. This rara avis flies between the courses of Saturn and Uranus in a highly elliptical 51-year orbit, closer at perihelion to the Sun than Saturn and almost as far out at aphelion as Uranus. This has the effect of moving him swiftly through some signs, such as Libra, but very slowly through others, such as Aries. The current scientific position is that Chiron probably originated in the Kuiper Belt, a disk of objects orbiting beyond Neptune. The first of many such minor planets (Centaurs) to be discovered, Chiron still remains the largest and most significant of these in terms of human destiny.
Chiron, immortal son of Kronos (Saturn), governs healing and relationships; he teaches us, as he did with Jason, Achilles and Heracles, to fulfil our ultimate potential. Chiron taught his secrets to Asclepios, the divine healer, but in modern astrology he profoundly stands for the deep wounds we have brought into this life to be healed – and so to enable us to heal others. His emblem represents holistic understanding. The area of the chart in which Chiron is located is the focus of the karmic healing process, which is often very painful.
When Chiron is activated by major progressions and transits, experiences tend to occur that bring us face to face with what really drove us to come here to this beautiful, but often painful planet. The sorrows and sufferings of the deep past are activated, brought to the surface, and we are given the chance to resolve them: to awaken from the sleep of ages. These experiences are karmic in the true sense of the word, for they will shake us until we wake, so long as we do not dull their effects with alcohol, drugs, or other ways of remaining drowsy, such as overwork or compulsive sex.
Chiron shakes us according to our character, as revealed through the symbols of the natal chart. A person with strong Mars will turn to violent action, or aggressive behaviour to avoid the truth; someone with strong Venus will smother consciousness in pleasure; one who has a powerful Moon may become drug or alcohol affected; Jupiter will turn to gambling; Saturn to overwork and so on for all the planetary types. The key to this is understanding the opportunity to reach a new level of consciousness, so that our own wounds may be healed and so that we may become a healing beacon in our own communities.
Unlike the drunken centaurs, Chiron was wise, with extensive knowledge of the healing arts, astrology, music and medicine. Heracles (Hercules) unintentionally wounded his teacher in the knee, during his battle with the centaurs. Thus his wound was in a sense self-inflicted, for he himself had taught the hero to make the poisoned arrow by dipping it in the blood of the Hydra.
The last of his kind, Chiron relinquished immortality so that the titanic rebel Prometheus (who brought the gift of fire – stolen from the gods – to the human race) could be released from his eternal torment. Thus he died so that humanity might live. After his death, he was placed in the firmament as the constellation Sagittarius.
Chiron is a knowledge-holder who transmits higher teachings, either as an outer teacher (Saturn), or as an inner teacher or spirit guide (Uranus). Embodying the archetype of “the wounded healer”, Chiron stresses the importance of going within to find an answer – and then sharing it with others.
In education, music and medicine, Chiron unites the body and mind, instinct and intellect. His ancient teachings are now resurfacing through the advent of holistic health and education. Chiron is often seen to be a “maverick”, perhaps due to his eccentric orbit, and his closeness to Uranus. He can also be held responsible for deep, dreamlike states of consciousness, especially when connected by a major aspect with Saturn.
Close to their fiftieth birthday, most people experience what astrologers call the Chiron Return, when Chiron by transit crosses over his position in their natal chart for the first time in fifty years. This is prime time for the karmic realisation to be unbound. People born between 1961 and 1968 with Chiron in Pisces are now entering their Chiron Return phase. This release of a renewed spirit is very much the purpose of incarnation on this shining blue world. We all carry a hefty load of baggage, and most of us must endure the suffering caused by a profound psychological wound. We need to heal this wound in order to function in a world of wellness, to be able to dance lightly across the dreamscape – and to give of our own true beauty so that others may be released in order to join us in the dance of the free spirit. Chiron has entered our consciousness again after a sleep of some two millennia, and now it is time to let him express his healing gift.
Chiron, the Wounded Healer
Chiron, the Wounded Healer of mythology, is a planet that orbits differently to the others. Said to be the ‘real’ ruler of Virgo because of it’s healing and Magickal properties, Chiron is also considered the feminine Centaur and so affiliated with Sagittarius. Chiron is subtle and experiential in its vibration and ‘niggling’ in its house placement. It is like the wound of the immortal God, unhealed, always there. This constant subtle pain is thought to produce some dynamic tendencies in individuals to come to terms with what is represented by this vibration in the area concerned. A skeleton in your closet not discussed too often but ever present subtly affects your attitude and pulls your focus in a certain direction. It may be suppressed but the pain will be real and on-going.
The Wounded Healer was a teacher and it is thought that the lessons of this planet will be paramount for our growth in this Age. It is referred to by Astrologer Barbara Hand Clow as ‘The Rainbow Bridge’ between ignorance and accomplishment, linking Saturn and Uranus, which co-rule in the paradox of Aquarius. Chiron is said to rule over Magick and if an understanding of magick can heal then perhaps Chiron’s vibrations at this point will resonate enough for science to and Magick to meet as allies.
Chiron’s myth is interesting, as all myths are. Hercules had returned from battling the Hydra and still had the poison on the tips of his arrows, not having cleaned it off in true Arian thoughtlessness. He was sitting on a hill with Chiron – eating lunch. Clumsily, Hercules leaned over and unfortunately pierced Chiron with the poisoned arrow. Aries/Hercules fought the Hydra but it was Chiron that copped the wound. Because Chiron was immortal he (or she) could not die, but would feel the pain of the poison forever. Chiron decided to give up immortality instead.
If we are all a part of the healing process of others then we are not immune to the antagonisms they face. If all is energy then I wonder if Chiron’s taking on the pain that Hercules escaped is analogous to how we take on the pain others escape. For example, the wife of an alcoholic or gambler feels pain most days, even during those times when the person themselves may feel their fight is over. They clumsily, like Hercules, who thought their battle was over and past – forget the poison lives on – harming others. I imagine that an 8th house Chiron might be the medium who gets too close to her communicators and is accidentally harmed. But we can get hurt, just sharing lunch, with a friend who brings their world to the table with them.
They say that in the challenge lies the cure and this would be in true Chiron style. Chiron is a centaur and is therefore a composite figure in myth, having the body of a horse and the head and shoulders of a human. If Zeus remains masculine ruler with man’s head and torso and the body of a horse then Chiron’s entry in the 1970’s may have finally brought a feminine centaur, a Yin to the unbalanced male Yang period. This is speculation of course but is worth considering, especially since the battle of the sexes is far from over. Interesting in this regard is that in the Greek legends Chiron was no female at all for this was a male domain where females had little or no input into affairs of state but were more child bearers as homosexuality ran rampant as men took boys to mentor in matters of state and relationships. Chiron was a teacher, which meant much more then than it does now because Chiron gave guidance that was respected in a sanctioned way.
We have a lot to learn about Chiron and perhaps more will come to light as this planet whose orbit is nothing like others grows in our psyche. In Living In Time Astrologer Palden Jenkins describes Chiron as having a sense of the different perspective about it. For example, an aspect with Saturn allows for “…finding needles in haystacks…” as ways around rigid systems become magickally possible when Chiron is around. Chiron can bend and stretch the usual perspectives of whatever happens in the house where it is located. This allows us to come at things from a different perspective, even as futility and lost hope have long taken hold in our consciousness. This is important for our future, a better future.
Lets look at the possible ways that Chiron, as a planet, acts in different signs and houses of our charts and enjoy the magick.
Chiron in Aries

You need to bring about the fullest potential, in an energetic and urgent way, in matters concerning the presentation of yourself. It could be that, for instance, you lack self-confidence, or you are too self-confident, for example. The solution lies within the problem (Perhaps in Libra, in relation to others). Through the areas of optimism, action and enthusiasm, you may find your resolution.
Chiron in Capricorn

It may be that, for instance, you seek to be powerful but you need to pay attention to what you really want (or need). Alternatively, you may need to seek more power and wealth. In any case, it is through your practical, cautious and common-sense that you will heal (earth).
Chiron in Aquarius

You need to bring about the fullest potential in the indifferent and unconventional way in which you deal with, for instance, friends, new ideas and discoveries, etc. The answer lies in the missing part of something you have. It may be that, for instance, you seek to be different but you need to pay attention to whether this is what you really want or whether it is a reaction to conventional thinking. Alternatively, you might need to be more indifferent to others and follow your own course, even if it is unconventional. Logic, communication, and information will be your main allies in resolving these issues (air).
Chiron in Pisces

You need to bring about the fullest potential in the indifferent and unconventional way in which you deal with, for instance, friends, new ideas and discoveries, etc. The answer lies in the missing part of something you have. It may be that, for instance, you seek to be different but you need to pay attention to whether this is what you really want or whether it is a reaction to conventional thinking. Alternatively, you might need to be more indifferent to others and follow your own course, even if it is unconventional. Logic, communication, and information will be your main allies in resolving these issues (air).
Chiron in Houses
Chiron in 1st House

In the first house, it may indicate a journey of self-discovery. Possibly, there were restrictions in early childhood that will have had the effect on you of either retreating into yourself or having to fight to be noticed. There will be a need to find personal meaning in existence. Some will do this by being overly aggressive, others by withdrawing. Having a job or interest that is really enjoyed will give a positive direction to your life.
Chiron in 2nd House

In the second house those things you value will come, experientially, under direct scrutiny by you even as you try to avoid perceiving them in any other way than what is culturally acceptable. You will be niggled through reframing your value systems because otherwise things just won’t ever add up. This prodding by Chiron will cause you to remember a variable about how and why you value things (or possess people), which will never allow you to be complacent or glib about your possessions. There may have been little or no affection or even inappropriate affection, in childhood. This could now be shown through stubbornness and a dismissive attitude to others opinions. You could be a great teacher of self-worth, when you have dealt with your own issues.
Chiron in 3rd House

Chiron in the 3rd house can be a sibling who is the source of a constant niggle for you because they subtly affect your way of viewing your world. Because of them you have to find other reasons (logic), or other ways of expression (perhaps they are deaf and you need to learn sign language?). Chiron in the 3rd house can mean an impediment to Mercury’s ears, eyes or speech. Often, when someone loses their sight or hearing their other senses are extended to balance the deficit. Chiron in the 3rd might let in other senses so that your cognition is expanded, or a need to expand in other perceptual areas niggles you until you do. n the third house it may indicate, perhaps unintentional, criticism by parents or siblings about the way you expressed yourself, producing a lack of self- confidence. There may have been some injury to your voice or you may have been too shy to speak. Your thoughts and words may take time to be expressed so as to be correct. Any errors you make will be excused so as not to appear to be in the wrong. Do not let yourself be hampered by technicalities, and learn to admit to mistakes.
Chiron in 4th House

Is your mother or father ill? Is your place of birth a place where a great deal of healing is needed, or takes place? Are you drawn to find home in places that may be very Chironic (experiential in healing)? Does your home niggle at you even as you are away from it during the day? Our home or base in the 4th house may not be the home we grew up in but the place we consider home, where we feel we need to be to grow. This may be an important quest for you even if it seems that something else overrides it. In the fourth house, it may indicate an insecure early family life, so much so that feelings of abandonment or being the ‘black sheep’ persist. A lack of self- confidence may make you think doing anything with your life is a waste of time. You probably have a lot of time for other people and have great empathy. Try to bring out the unique you by using this feeling of being ‘different’.
Chiron in 5th House

Have you ever created a work of Art that itself has healing properties? Why would you? You will resonate to the answer to this question with Chiron in the 5th house. Alternatively, is there a child that you do not see but always you know they are there that affects you? Do you have problems with your heart? Are you able to, magically, affect the hearts of others, metaphorically speaking, through attracting many experiences of loving relationships into your life? In the fifth house, it may indicate a feeling of having to take life too seriously, too early. You are easily deflated due, probably, to parents who told you that you could not do ‘that’ – though you would have known that you could. There will be a need to draw boundaries for ego survival. Though do not go so far as to cut yourself off from people completely. You are very creative but do not recognize it. Just do it.
Chiron in 6th House

In the 6th house of health and wholistic becoming Chiron can reveal itself in blatant experiences that do not seem as subtle as they do in the other houses. Remember that Chiron’s niggles will always be able to be found in very real experiences that are viewable. In this house the viewable may incorporate not only the body but also the grounding experiences of soul/mind/spirit. Alternative therapy may remain slightly hidden in its way of behaving but anyone who has gone to an alternative therapist and found fast amazing cure will have experienced an undeniable reality. This is the stuff of the 6th house. You are affected and become more integrated in the 6th house. In the sixth house, it may indicate a pre-occupation with health issues, maybe to do with accidents when you were young. You tend to obsess about your own health. You have great healing ability and when you have come to the point of dealing with your own issues, you will achieve great success in this field.
Chiron in 7th House

Where the first house is you the 7th, the opposite, is your partner. This may be a love partner or a business partner. It may be that this person was in an accident and remains in a state where they are never the same after the accident. You don’t think about them every waking minute but, like a mother does of her child, they are always there in the background of your mind. The partner will open up a different frame of reference through which you can view your world. In the seventh house, it may indicate a feeling of rejection to do with relationships, maybe the parents split-up or were distant with each other. You may marry early and there may be more than one marriage or close relationship. You are quite empathic and even psychic. There is a need for finding a balance between you and your partner – you are not one person. Find your ‘self’.
Chiron in 8th House

Chiron in the 8th house can bring experiences with the world of spirit. It can bring experiences with your partner’s possessions (the 8th being opposite the 2nd of your possessions/values). The 8th house is about the merging together of very different things, or different people (partners). Chiron here provides experiences that are subtle enough not to appear Scorpion in its destructive/creative impulse but may indeed be as poisonous or impacting as if it were Pluto here. Sometimes a niggle can be worse than an explosion because of its constancy. The 8th house Chiron will be obvious to you when you look for it. Chiron is subtle but it is very real in manifestation so not usually difficult to locate. In the eighth house, it may indicate losses through the death of loved ones but also gains through births. Personal desires will be very important to you, to the point of ‘anything goes’. You will have psychic abilities that, when trained, will be a great force for good. You could be a mystic with great insight.
Chiron in 9th House

Chiron in the 9th house of publishing, vocation, foreign cultures, long distance travel allows experiences to take place that are significant. The magick of travel is alive and well with Chiron in this house and there will be healing involved in these travels. You may travel only in your mind with Chiron here but your discoveries will be great if you do. Palden’s Chiron “finding needles in haystacks” in the 9th house is about gaining access to many possibilities (or previously thought of impossibilities!). In the ninth house, it may indicate some crisis to do with spiritual teaching. A strong belief of one sort or another that must be channeled correctly to give the right balance. Being the eternal student should be enjoyable, not stressful, so take time to relax. You could be a very good teacher, if your extreme opinions are modified.
Chiron in 10th House

Again, it may be the father or the mother whose healing niggles at you. This time this niggling may affect your public status. Does one of your parents expect you to excel in the public limelight? Or are you drawn to do so for reasons that themselves niggle but manifest from something quite obvious when you dare to look at it? Are you a healer yourself? The 10th house is ‘on show’ and is concerned with systems and order and public reputation and status. Chiron here also may make direct links to the brain and there may be a niggling feeling that something is always getting through to your head that motivates you. In the tenth house, it may indicate a strong desire to prove your self-worth because of childhood rejection. Your need for status may become obsessive, and your good leadership quality needs to be controlled. Improving the lot of others, close to you, is admirable but not if it brings you down. It will only make you feel resentful and bitter. Try to accept yourself as you are.
Chiron in 11th House

In group situations do you feel uncomfortable, as if you remember an experience from your past that is triggered every time you find yourself in a group again? Are you concerned with social healing? Do you experience your social life in ways that are a bit different to the usual? For example, are there many groups of people who you come into contact with that seem to remind you of what it is that niggles you, toward experience? In the eleventh house, it may indicate rejection from peers because of being ‘different’. You may feel some discomfort in large groups, so you only associate with people of like mind. You have a capacity for leadership, if only you would loosen-up with strangers – we are, after all, connected to everything and everyone. You have a special thing to do in this life, you ‘just’ have to realize what it is.
Chiron in 12th House

Psychology, prisons, hospitals, hidden enemies – all these things fall into the domain of the 12th house. The 12th is the subliminal house and the house where we place those things we do not really want in our faces as we journey through each of our days. Chiron will bring experiences of this house to the surface but the underlying niggle will remain an important catalyst that draws you to such experiences. The Hydra’s poison was not curable, however, there is a lot to be said for becoming human! n the twelfth house, it may indicate nervous tension, perhaps picked up from a close family member. You probably have psychic, empathic and healing abilities. Don’t keep shutting yourself off from people – they need your unique abilities. Help others by learning to use these ‘gifts’ – it will give great, personal benefit but you will need to be emotionally strong and mature.
Chiron Aspects
In the average chart, unless your client is actively involved in the psychic, holistic or healing arts, you are going to be looking at Chiron as an indicator of “early childhood issues” which affect and in some ways determine their physical and psychological well-being as adults. Chiron can be a bit of a “blind spot” with some folks and thus much be approached with tact and compassion. These are often sore-spots, and there can be outright denial or rejection if you get too close to the truth. The upside to Chiron is that when the placement is in relatively good condition, there can be something of a “blessing in disguise” energy related to Chiron. One could lose a job for example, then discover that they are in the perfect place to start a new business. Or, they could lose an abusive partner days before meeting someone they might have rejected previously.
Healing ability: A prominent Chiron can indicate healing ability. In general, the number of aspects between Chiron and the other planets indicates the degree of healing potential in a client, but you will find it is almost inevitable when Chiron is close to an axis-point, especially the Ascendant or Midheaven. Look at Neptune, Uranus and the sign where Chiron is placed to determine the over-all pattern of the client’s healing skills.
Chiron/Sun

In positive aspects, Sun and Chiron combine to create harmony, empathy and understanding in the native. A positive self-image can be enhanced by beneficial contacts. The harsher contacts can bring out rage, anger and frustration stemming from a lack of self-worth or a blow to the ego. It can be hard for the individual to express their inner needs, ideas, and emotions when Chiron is adversely affected in transits. Positive Sun-Chiron contacts in the natal chart can indicate profound depth and a good self-esteem build at an early age. If the natal Chiron has stressful aspects, they can find that the years before mid-life are difficult, that they have to struggle to assert themselves. Their can be frustration and resentment related to their position in life.
Chiron/Moon

In the natal chart, a positive aspect can indicate a person who is extremely sensitive, empathic and mystical. “Boundary problems” are a big-time problem here, regardless of the supportive or challenging aspects. The degree to which this is a problem will be indicated by the aspects. Anyone with a Chiron-Moon placement should learn grounding principles and psychic protection. There can be indications of rejection by the mother if the aspects are challenging.
Chiron/Mercury

This placement, when positively supported, can indicate a highly developed mind, a sharp intuition, perhaps clairvoyant ability. Unless there are also positive aspects to Neptune or the Moon, however, this may not translate to healing ability. This is the realm of the mind rather than the heart. The native can tend to be a bit of a “know it all”, and the degree to which this is a benefit or a drawback may be indicated by the number of supportive versus challenging aspects.
Chiron/Venus

This native approaches sexual and sensual experiences with a childlike charm and innocence that makes them incredibly attractive. When the two planets are in harmonious contact, a client might be having sexual or creative experiences which are out of the normal realms of social tastes, but are absolutely vital to their own personal development. There can be problems with sexual or gender identity when the two planets are not in harmony, and a challenging aspect can indicate physical, emotional or sexual abuse in childhood. These people become expert at “reading” the motives of other people, and learn to use their sexuality as a shield of protection.
Chiron/Mars

If you want to discover the true meaning of the old phrase “immovable object meets irresistible force”, get in between this native and some goal they have in mind. This placement can be described as the sacred warrior archetype. They are not afraid to pick up the sword in defence of others, and can be drawn to military careers. Energy and intuition come together with a strong drive to take action, to accomplish demonstrable goals. In early life, they may feel that their personal desires were challenged continually, so they fight hard for their desires. They do not count on others to come to their rescue. These people tend to take on leadership positions, but can become dictators if the placement is challenging. If their desire to lead is thwarted, they can become bitter and petty.
Chiron/Jupiter

Chiron together with Jupiter lends itself to creative abilities and these people do tend to have something of a “magic touch”, especially those with strong contacts to Leo or the 5th house. Excellent teachers and healers, they are bright, lucky and talented when the two planets aspect in harmony, but when they are stressed, the native is often challenged by their own high expectations for themselves and others. Religious and spiritual intolerance can become a problem as they tend to see their own beliefs as “universal”.
Chiron/Saturn

Where were you in 1966? It was the year of Haight-Ashbury, a period of general stress in families and the greater social culture, and Saturn was conjunct Chiron. Chiron and Saturn is a tough placement regardless of the aspect. It often indicates problems with father and authority figures. The native may struggle to find their own place in the world as a result of abandonment or abuse during childhood. Society and culture at large can be viewed with distrust and suspicion. If the aspects are positive, and the native takes the time to learn about their own motivation, they can become powerful authority figures, teachers and leaders themselves. If they are unable to overcome the cynicism of the placement they can fall prey to bitterness and reject social contact altogether.
Chiron/Uranus

Individualistic, opinionated, energetic and constantly changing, these people can find it difficult to find a place within the greater social culture because they are so passionate, yet “otherworldly”. Freedom-loving and independent, they find it difficult to settle down. They love to experiment, to innovate, and can be most at home in creative fields involving technology.
Chiron/Neptune

A stressful Neptune-Chiron placement can indicate that the native is, frankly, not living in the real world. They can often be quite aware that they are “professional daydreamers”, and a career in the arts, television or film can be a positive expression of a good contact between these two planets. However, they can indicate self-deception and delusional thinking, drug and sexual abuse when they are strongly challenged. It is Neptune that will tell the astrologer where this client’s “idealism”, their dreams and desires, are strongest.
Chiron/Pluto

The native blessed (or cursed) with this combination is intense, dramatic, profound and deep. There can be deep and hidden scars from childhood that either strengthen or break the individual later in life. Stressed, there can be huge struggles throughout life, and there is a virtual certainty of some form of childhood abandonment or rejection. If you have this placement, there are two keys to healing: Know yourself, and find a way to turn your own pain into a tool to heal others.
Chiron/Nodes

This placement is strongly indicative of an important karmic lifetime. The native may exhibit strong interest in spiritual or holistic healing, and they are often powerful teachers and leaders. They may struggle in early life to achieve social acceptance.
Chiron/Midheaven

Chiron placed in this position is a strong indicator that the native’s career will have some kind of Chironic flavour. They can end up as teachers, healers or leaders. At the same time, they remain perpetual students (which may be one key to their frequent successes in such fields). The early career is mainly set back by feelings of low self-worth, which they overcome so they are stronger examples of the lessons they will teach.
