Uranus

Key to Freedom of Expression

Uranus indicates the manner in which the individual seeks new friendships and group and organizational associates, as well as new experiences. Uranus brings new, sudden, and often unexpected experiences and changes into the individual’s life. It also indicates the way in which the individual goes about seeking freedom and independence.

Uranus, the planet of sudden and unexpected changes, rules freedom and originality. In society it rules radical ideas and people, as well as revolutionary events that upset established structures. Uranus among all planets most governs genius. The personal implications of Uranus in your life are shown by its house position and its aspects with other planets in your chart. It describes areas of unpredictability and difference. Being highly unorthodox, Uranus identifies the unusual or unique. Friends and associations to which you belong are indicated, as is your potential involvement with arcane studies, science and technology, computers, and the media. Uranus, one of the outer trans-personal planets, takes around seven years to transit one sign, or about 84 years to move through all twelve signs. Groups of people with Uranus in the same sign are separated by 84 years, so the influence of this planet is primarily generational. Nevertheless, Uranus transits and hard aspects to the natal chart can be especially disruptive. When Uranus by transit reaches the opposite point in your chart to his natal position, astrologers call this the Uranus Opposition. The aspect, occurring at around 40 years of age, might best be described as a sign of the mid-life crisis. Under this influence, most people experience some sort of trepidation regarding the future, as well as unsettling reflections on the past. It is a time when generations clash: your generation clashes with the fashions, ideas and ways of the rising generation.

Though you may feel rather outdated by the “new wave”, this is not designed to make you feel old, only different. You are probably just as unwilling to give up the sense of uniqueness that belongs to your own age-group as the current generation is to give up their particular approach and accept that your generation is unique in any way at all. Little meeting of the minds (or tastes) is found during this phase. Unless your work (or the work of those with a strong influence in your life) depends on finding ways for directly opposing forces to compromise, it is best not to let such conflict disrupt your life. Because Uranus is almost completely invisible to the naked eye, it was not included in the ancient schema of astrology. In fact, despite having been observed by telescope since 1690, it was not officially “discovered” until March 13, 1781, by English astronomer, Sir William Herschel. He named it Georgium Sidus (George’s Star) after his patron King George III, but his discovery was later renamed Herschel, by astronomer Jérôme Lalande. The more mythologically appropriate Uranus – Uranus was the father of Saturn, just as Saturn was the father of Jupiter – was selected by German astronomer Johann Bode (who in 1772 had predicted its location via Bode’s Law) and first published in 1823, though not finally accepted by HM Nautical Almanac Office until 1850. Uranus, which has a set of rings and 27 known satellites, was the first planet to be “discovered” by telescope, thus expanding the known solar system and creating considerable uproar in academic circles. It is unusual in that it rotates on its side, like a ball, rather than spinning like top, as do other planets. Quite unconventional!

Despite this scientific furore, Uranus is actually visible even to the naked eye under certain conditions. There is evidence that ancient astronomers had observed (and named) Uranus, though they chose not to incorporate it in the astrological schema, perhaps partly due to its dimness and slow movement. Consequently, Uranus has no traditional rulership or exaltation, though many modern astrologers claim that Uranus has replaced Saturn as the ruler of Aquarius. Modern astrologers generally agree that Uranus is well-placed in Aquarius and may be said to be the co-ruler of that sign, though Saturn definitely remains the traditional ruler.

Uranus in Aries

You value freedom and you have the energy and sense of urgency to accomplish it for yourself and others. You can think up new ideas and to present them with energy and enthusiasm. Without some self control however, you can be rushing around with a bee in your bonnet and getting nowhere. You can be deeply inspired over unconventional things, including inventions (fire, Uranus) but might not get round to finish them (Cardinal sign) if you don’t get the results quickly.

Uranus in Taurus

You can make your ideas (Uranus) work because you are practical (earth) and persevering (fixed sign) in matters related to personal wealth. However, you may have conflicts (Uranus in fall) between having new ideas and being somewhat slow to get started (Taurus, earth, fixed sign). And you may feel trapped in rules and regulations (earth) when you want to be free to do your own thing.

Uranus in Gemini

You have the urge to deviate in a versatile and variable ways in relation to ideas (air). That is, you produce lots of strange and unconventional ideas, which may be good or not so good. You seek the future through inventing new ways of thinking and relating to others (air). You may develop new ways of communicating (Gemini). You tend to be torn between different ideas and have problems making up your mind (Gemini, the twins).

Uranus in Cancer

You have the urge to deviate in matters related to the home (in its widest sense), ethnic origins, self-development, etc, in an instinctive and protective manner. This can mean rebelling against the traditional forms of security such as the home and the native country and looking for new alternative ways of forming one’s base, such as self-development. You tend to be emotional (water, water bearer) in a variable way, which can make you sympathetic with others feelings, or may mean you react emotionally to the conventional home or to patriotism.

Uranus in Leo

You tend to deviate impressively and creatively in relation to pleasures. You choose new pleasures, perhaps unconventional ones, and ways of enjoying yourself. You may experience some conflict between your basically casual, or “cool” attitude and an enthusiasm to impress others (Uranus detriment), perhaps with new ideas (inspirations) and new ways of having fun (Uranus in detriment). You should avoid being overconfident and taking too many risks. You can be too proud and seek power for its own sake.

Uranus in Virgo

You tend to deviate in an analytical and critical manner, particularly as it relates to work, service, hygiene and health. This can mean attraction to unconventional methods of healing, new ways of work, and ingenious ways of cleaning up the social (public) environment. Again, this can mean, for instance, and interest in devising new work practices, or devising unconventional work practices, and similarly, for healing.. new or alternative. It is likely that you are practical and can put your new ideas to practical effect (earth).

Uranus in Libra

Your tendency to deviate, diplomatically and harmoniously, is in the area of interpersonal relationships, particularly partners. In the area of marriage, it can mean that you must have the space to do your own thing. You may be novel in your relationships with others on a one-to-one, equal basis. You are a charming friend with unconventional ideas on how you relate.

Uranus in Scorpio

While you are a thinker (Uranus) and appear to be somewhat detached, you are extremely emotional (Scorpio, the water bearer). You might tend to hide the emotional part of you. You may be unconventional in the way you show your feelings. You may make drastic and sudden changes, which might also be fundamentally transforming. You might change yourself through discovering and eliminating deep and passionate emotions, or you might help others with this skill.

Uranus in Sagittarius

You deviate in a free and tolerant way, especially in relation to long journeys, philosophy, religion and higher education. People born in these years tend to innovate in various areas of knowledge. They may even be innovative in religion. In order to seek release from accepted beliefs and dogmas, they travel a lot to distant places, with the purpose of leaning and experiencing more. They are particularly good at dreaming up new ideas (Uranus, fire). You may be involved in unleashing your ties to common social beliefs and creating new ways of thinking.

Uranus in Capricorn

You are fortunate in that you have the capacity to have inspirations or ideas (Uranus) and be able to translate them into practice. You can take your unconventional ideas or inventions and through being prudent and reserved, and by being persevering (fixed sign) translate the ideas into something practical (earth). Freedom and independence are very important to you, and you are not deterred by others in going your own way, so you can persist and succeed.

Uranus in Aquarius

You are at home when you are doing your own thing, and do not care too much what other people think. You tend to be unconventional with your friends and with “your public”. You are a loyal friend so people put up with any eccentricities. Also, you are extremely tolerant of any unconventional behaviour and beliefs which your friends hold. You are not afraid to lend a hand when your friends need you. You are a person of thoughts and ideas, and also a communicator (air), but some of your ideas and beliefs might not be practical. You can be an original and progressive thinker, also being analytical. So you might be interest in or involved in science.

Uranus in Pisces

You deviate in impressionable and inspirational ways, particularly in spiritual and religious beliefs. You are sensitive and emotional (water) and you may be psychic, that is you naturally do the right thing. You are adaptable and versatile (mutable) and you may have an uncanny sense of knowing things (Uranus). You may have an interest in unconventional music, art or spiritual beliefs.

Uranus in 1st House

Uranus in the first house alters the way an individual projects personal energies onto others. You are likely to seek, nay demand, freedom in the way you present yourself to the world. Dressing simply but quirkily, you will have no problems in asserting yourself. You are not shy in letting everyone know where you stand on issues. In fact you take pride in presenting your unique perspective. “I am a simple soul with few wants and needs,” is what you tell yourself. All you can feel is an altruistic desire to change the world! Friends and relatives probably find you a trifle erratic. They know you to be good-hearted and genuine about your feelings. Your passions rise fast and you lose interest at the same rate.

Uranus in 2nd House

Your attitude to real world possessions differs from most. You may look at money and cars as a means to an end. If you find that they support the quirky lifestyle that your heart desires then you are all right with having some of your own. You may decide though that these things tie you down to one place and hence subvert your freedom of movement. If this happens then you are likely to shy away from acquiring worldly possessions. The possessions you desire will be ones that help you lead the “free” lifestyle you desire. You may value money in the bank as that money can buy you the freedom you crave.

Uranus in 3rd House

You act and communicate with people around you in an offbeat, eccentric, and zany way. Naturally friendly, you very often make people smile with your wit and easy good-humour. People look upon you to ease a boring day knowing you will perhaps have something new to say about the mundane. Your eccentricity may puzzle and sometimes annoy some. You win them over with your humility, open mind, and honesty. Creativity in communication and in all that you do sets you apart from most.

Uranus in 4th House

Uranus in the fourth house may alter your nurturing style significantly. You seek unusual ways to express your desires in this arena that sets you apart from most. The concept of nurturing doesn’t come naturally to you. Your independent streak might make you want to run away from nurturing when it’s proffered to you. As a nurturer, you can be very loving and caring. But sometimes you withdraw and prefer aloofness. To others you may appear erratic but there’s nothing wrong with your intentions. At heart you always have the best of intentions. Uranus in the fourth may indicate the style of nurturing or “mothering” that you yourself have received as a child. You may remember your childhood as adequate in material areas but somewhat lacking in emotional support.

Uranus in 5th House

Fifth house play and self-expression are happy hunting grounds for Uranus. Creativity and change are the bywords of Uranus in the fifth. You take great pleasure in doing things differently. You are naturally creative and find it easy to implement change. As a teenager you may decide to date an older person. Your love relationships will always start with a twist. Charming and zany in love, you will create your own world with ease. Your love of freedom will make you choose activities that may sound weird to others. You will go about life with zest and find challenges in all that you do. Others will find your offbeat lifestyle stimulating.

Uranus in 6th House

You are likely to enjoy work associated with science and technology. Working, especially day-to-day stuff may be more of a chore to you than most. Your freedom loving instincts propel you to seek out work that allows you the most personal freedom. A regular eight-to-five kind of job is likely a turn off for you. Your work desk will usually resemble a disaster area. Natural creativity and a desire to do mundane things differently and more efficiently are your forte. On matters of health, you are the kind of person who keeps up with the ever changing views of health experts. However you are more than likely to adopt some unique views of your own that differ from what the “experts” are saying.

Uranus in 7th House

Partners and people who you are in a one-on-one relationship with will complain about your erratic and inconstant ways. However, they will be charmed by your genuineness and simplicity. You may shy away from making a commitment and see relationships as a necessary evil. Your freedom loving ways make you hate feeling tied down. The whole idea of relationships may be slightly alien to your basic nature. In a partner you may search for a certain aloofness or love of personal freedom to feel secure. Your ideal partner enjoys his or her personal freedom as much as you do.

Uranus in 8th House

Uranus is quite at home in the eighth house of resurrections. You are naturally open and support change. “Change is good,” is your constant motto. Re-inventing yourself from time to time sounds like a good idea to you. You couldn’t possibly have it otherwise. Life would be boring without change. Your style and pace of bringing about change though may leave others dazed and breathless. The style of change that you prefer can be destructive to those around you. Your good intentions are never at doubt though. It’s just that you are addicted to your ideas and you sometimes overlook human emotions. Your natural impatience with status quo drives you to move fast leaving the staid behind.

Uranus in 9th House

You are likely to be comfortable with new ideas, radical philosophies, and thoughts that oppose the traditional. Playing around with new ideas by yourself or with others is your passion. Traveling, meeting new people, reading, and other such mind expansion activities will interest you. Conservative people might turn you off and you might find their ways claustrophobic. Any activity that calls for higher thinking is an opportunity for you to add your unique and creative spin. Your natural instincts oppose accepting the boundaries of the world we live in. You are constantly looking for opportunities to expand the limits placed by the real world.

Uranus in 10th House

The concept of identifying with a career may be alien to your basic nature. You are fiercely independent and hate to be defined by any one thing that you do. Constantly on the move in your career, you will shy away from identifying with one. You will do what you do in a creative and competent fashion. Yet you will enjoy maintaining your own unique identity. Hierarchies and power games at work will turn you off. You prefer the equality and freedom of flat structures. You may find inner peace in an offbeat career and take off on an archaeological mission to Africa. Social status is of little or no concern for you. At home and at work, your ideas of playing “father” might be unconventional. You make an excellent father as you are capable of opening doors and collapsing barriers as no other. Your progenies might just have to get used to the unusual.

Uranus in 11th House

Your independence doesn’t allow you to identify too closely with any group or social circle. Goals and ambitions for you are idealistic. You crave your ideals and may not be willing to compromise them to fit in with others. Thus you go around life feeling slightly superior to, and perhaps disdainful of people who compromise their ideals to just “fit in”. Your personal charm and wit will mesmerize many. While interacting in a group situation you are likely to come across as a bit aloof and erratic. In the short term this can cause misunderstandings. People will appreciate your simplicity and honesty in the long run. You pride yourself a loner in many ways. However you are likely to connect really well with people who share your ideals and these relationships will last a lifetime.

Uranus in 12th House

A burning need for freedom and a deep altruistic desire to change the world you live in underlie your actions but you will shy away from articulating this need and desire. Depending on your situation this might play out in various ways. As an example, if you are a successful business person, you might join or start a program to encourage young entrepreneurs. Or, you might simply choose to quietly give young entrepreneurs breaks when you can. You will always search for personal freedom and ways to make the world a better place for everyone. In close relationships you will often tend to search for freedom loving and creative people. Keeping the company of creative people will be comforting for you. A career in the sciences or technology may suit you well. You could be artistic and creative as well. No matter what you do, you will find yourself drawn to all that surpasses the limits placed by the world we live in.

Uranus Aspects

Uranus can make other planets function crazily. It can make them seem hyper. Whatever Uranus touches will not function in socially acceptable “normal” ways.

Uranus/Sun

Gives independence and the desire to do things “differently”. When positive, brilliance to the point of genius. When negative, it can make you an eccentric who delights in shocking people, or just plain crazy.

Uranus/Moon

Faith McInnerney, as far as I know, was the first one to notice that people with stressful aspects between the Moon and Uranus have a fear of abandonment and tend to be hysterics. The Moon shows, in any horoscope, relationships with women in general, particularly the mother. The stressful aspects (0, 90, and 180 degrees, the conjunction, square, and opposition) frequently mean that the mother’s schedule was erratic during the first few years of the person’s life, usually because the mother herself was erratic. As a result, the child, to survive, cuts off, says “I don’t need her”. Everything is fine until they grow up and start dating. When they really like someone, up comes the feeling: “I need you”, and that’s when they run.

If they can’t run, they do or say something to make the other person run. There is also a tendency to be attracted to someone who is unavailable (married or out of town). In fact, the more unavailable the love interest, the greater the attraction. These traits are usually more noticeable in a women. A man will simply be a “love them and leave them” type, or attract hysterical women as lovers. Personally, I have never seen this interpretation miss. The hit rate is 100%. The harmonious aspects simply give an attraction to the new and unusual, although, even here, there may be flashes of the hysterical syndrome.

Uranus/Mercury

Give a mind that is attracted to the new and unusual. This combination increases brilliance, flashes of genius. According to C.E.O.Carter, the harmonious aspects (60 and 120 degrees, the sextile and the trine) are common in the horoscopes of astrologers. Well, I have a trine, at any rate. The stress aspects increase the stubbornness. These folks have to learn to keep an open mind a little longer than they usually do before making it up because, once their mind is made up, it seldom changes. They can change their own minds several times a day (especially if these planets are in mutable signs) but no one else can change their minds for them even once.

Uranus/Venus

Will attract strange and bizarre lovers, but the stressful aspects go well beyond that. Uranus wants independence, freedom. If a relationship becomes too “normal”, it breaks. And Uranus doesn’t just leave. It suddenly ejects. Elizabeth Taylor has Venus an Uranus in conjunction in Aries. That sign placement only makes this combination more explosive and unstable. These stressful aspects between Venus and Uranus are one of the combinations that can cause the blood sugar to fluctuate, and tends towards hypoglycemia. The other combinations are Venus/Saturn and Venus/Pluto. The harmonious aspects usually manage to be unusual and avant garde without being so inconstant.

Uranus/Mars

Tends to be accident prone because it inclines to taking risks. This is especially true of the stressful aspects. Mars is the planet of action and energy. Uranus is the planet of sudden and unexpected change. Unless other factors in the horoscope pull you in the opposite direction, you will be rebellious and defiant of authority. The stressful aspects also shorten the temper. Watch out if you have the conjunction, square, or opposition of these two. The temper can go like a shot. Uranus aspects tend towards nervous tension. In this case, the outlet is direct action. When fighting, you incline to pull unexpected stunts that will either confuse the hell out of your opponent and lead to victory, or totally backfire and lead to quick defeat. The harmonious aspects are a little more moderate, but any aspect between these two planets make a person impatient and give an above average interest in machinery and hi-tech devices.

Uranus/Jupiter

Jupiter shows our ability to grasp general principles, and so it can affect the philosophy we live by. Uranus is the planet of the unusual and the shocking. People with this placement will be attracted to ideas and systems of thought that are at odds with the prevailing views of their society. The ones with the harmonious aspects (sextile and trine) will tend to get away with it and be regarded as avant garde. Those with the square and opposition won’t. They will be regarded as eccentric, at best, and dangerous cranks at worst.

Uranus/Saturn

If these two planets were people, they wouldn’t like each other. Saturn rules everything old and conservative, Uranus the new, the shocking, the bizarre. Because they move so slowly, they can keep an aspect for about a year and affect everyone born during that time. With the stressful aspects, they can act like little kids, each screaming for attention at the same time. No matter which one you give attention to, the other will complain. If you try to keep everything in your life normal and well ordered, Uranus will cause you to be nervous, edgy, and bored until eventually, you won’t be able to take it any more and you will simply EJECT from the situation. But if you try to be innovative and original, different in any way, Saturn strikes back with its great weapon, Murphy’s Law, and everything goes wrong. The only solution is to give them both attention at the same time. Do something new, different, and unusual, but do it in a practical and orderly way. Or do something old fashioned and conservative, but always give it a new twist. Then, you will succeed. With the harmonious aspects, you will most likely do this naturally and it won’t be a problem.

Uranus/Ascendant

The conjunction will make you act like an Aquarian, independent, original, a bit shocking. The sextile and trine gives these traits in a more acceptable and less shocking way, and also can attract you to original and stimulating partners. The square and opposition tend towards unstable partnerships, or partnerships with unstable persons.

Uranus/Midheaven

Is better off being self-employed, or, at least, having a boss who leaves one alone. Uranian careers include anything dealing with electricity or high tech (electrical engineer, workers in TV or radio, computers, programmers, etc.). Actors with this aspect tend to succeed better in TV than the movies. The boss may be a very independent or eccentric type, a crazy genius, or even just plain crazy. At least one parent will also be that way. Independent, eccentric, insane. There will tend to have been a greater than normal number of sudden incidents in the childhood, such as many sudden moves, etc.
